Naruto question: Your thoughts on the Wave mission in fanfics?

Something every 'rewrite' author must have considered in the process of writing their story. I got stumped on it when I was writing Precious People. Years later, I still wonder if it was a good decision to invent an entirely new mission; some days I think it works, others I'm on the fence.
